Natural Hoof Care DVD Set Review:Tools of the Trade with Pete Ramey

Post image for Natural Hoof Care DVD Set Review:<br/>Tools of the Trade with Pete Ramey
Since this month’s articles have been a series on natural hoof care, I thought it would be fitting to do our monthly review on Pete Ramey’s “Tools of the Trade” DVD set.

Although this is not a new release (released in 2008), I thought it would be a nice addition to our product review series for 2010.

I feel the more aware people become of different products the more they will spread the word about the great ones, so this is one of my contributions.

Natural Hoof Care For The Horse Guardian

Post image for Natural Hoof Care For The Horse Owner – Part 3In parts one and two of getting started with natural hoof care, I first gave a brief introduction and, second, provided a jump-start article for traditional farriers.

For the most part, all of the resources in “Natural Hoof Care For The Traditional Farrier” apply to this article as well.  However, I plan to take a slightly different approach to this write-up than I did for parts one and two.

This article will provide a high-level guide for the horse guardian when choosing a natural hoof care professional.

Natural Hoof Care For The Traditional Farrier

Post image for Natural Hoof Care For The Traditional Farrier – Part 2
In part one of this series “Natural Hoof Care An Introduction“, I gave a high-level description of my personal journey to using natural hoof care principles.  I decided to write this series because I’m often asked the question “Where do I start?”.

Most of the people who ask that question have horses with lameness issues.  Some are friends of professional farriers asking for a farrier and others thought it might help enhance their horse’s performance and health.  Each person and horse situation is different.

This is the first article in a series on getting started with natural hoof care.  I’m going to start with this as an introduction.  Then the “getting started” articles below  follow:

Each article will be related but will focus on those specific topics.

Feeding Commercial Horse Feeds – What To Consider

Post image for Feeding Commercial Horse Feeds – What To Consider
The intent of this article is not to bash particular name brand feeds or give you complete solutions but rather to provide information to promote awareness around what you feed your horse(s).

If you haven’t been concerned about how many horse feed recalls there have been in the last eight years, it may be time to think about it and choose your feed wisely. By wisely, I mean not just from a nutritional standpoint but also from a safety standpoint.

Book Review: A Modern Horse Herbal by Hilary Page Self

horse_herbal
Many years ago I decided to purchase the book A Modern Horse Herbal by Hilary Page Self.  I felt this book would be a good opening review for our 2010 series.  Over the years I have found myself consistently recommending two books that should be part of everyone’s equine book collection and this is one of them.

When I started down my path to non-traditional horse care, I was determined to find answers to many of the questions I had in regard to common problems that our horses face with traditional approaches.

Could Drastic Changes in Barometric Pressure Affect Your Horse?

Post image for Could Drastic Changes in Barometric Pressure Affect Your Horse?
During certain times of the year, dramatic weather changes can occur quickly.  One day it’s beautiful, 71 degrees and sunny, and the next day there’s a drastic 40 degree drop in the temperature.

That happened here in Texas over Christmas in 2009.  A drastic drop in the barometric pressure started to occur the day before Christmas Eve.  On Christmas Eve day a blizzard blew in bringing a heavy snow/rain and sleet mix with 45 mph winds.  For a native Texan, it was miserable.

Drastic weather changes can cause problems for both your horse and you.  When the barometer drops dramatically prior to a big storm, some horses, as well as people, can experience ill effects.

Our Most Noble Friend The Horse

Post image for Our Most Noble Friend The Horse
As I was out walking the horse track, putting out hay and doing the regular poop-scooping regimen, I thought to myself, what am I going to write about the week of Christmas? I usually do some of my best brainstorming and come up with most of my ideas while I’m out doing my regular equine chores in the mornings.

What immediately popped into my head was this question, “What do you think about around Christmas?” and the first thing that came to mind was my father who passed away in 2002.

I continued to ponder how I would write about my father and not cause everyone to cry. I also thought how would I tie it in with something equine related. A good friend came to mind.

Frozen With Fear – Part 2

Post image for Frozen With Fear – Part 2

Embarking upon a direction that is “out of the norm” is very intimidating and it’s not something that comes natural for most people. Each person’s life experiences are different and valuable in there own way. When we finally make the decision to change a thought process that we have held closely for so long, it can be a challenge and a bit overwhelming. This is why so many people choose not to go down the road of change, especially when it is not the “traditional” way of doing things. It’s called “the road less traveled” for a reason.
