About Sharon Tousley

Sharon Tousley is an animal lover, virtual assistant & co-founder of Soulful Equine. After spending several years in corporate finance and accounting, Sharon has taken her love for numbers and research and merged that with her passion for health and nutrition in order to find ways to help the animals she cares about so much. Other interests include travel, movies and reading biographies. She loves to laugh and could easily spend WAY too much time watching classic sitcoms such as "I Love Lucy and "Dick Van Dyke." Check out her articles here.

I’m pleased to feature an article today from Sharon Tousley, who is my partner in Soulful Equine. Sharon is an exceptional writer but she usually stays behind the scenes here at Soulful Equine helping to make sure things are running smoothly. Although Sharon is not the horse lover between us (she’s more the dog lover), I’ve been working on convincing her to write more for Soulful Equine. Please make her feel welcome by adding your comment at the bottom of this article.

You’re sitting down, right?

Don’t worry. I don’t have bad news and I’m not going to shock you (at least not intentionally). I’m just trying to picture what most of my readers are doing right now.

You’re probably reading this on some kind of device or printed off on paper – holding it with your hands – reading it with your eyes – breathing freely in and out. Probably in a cozy home, warmed with heat or cooled with air conditioning.

Temple Grandin – A Movie Review

temple grandin
In one of my previous articles called When the Experts Fail Us, I addressed how the health care industry for humans, and for our animals, has failed us on numerous occasions.  I gave personal examples as well as mentioning one very famous example, a very special lady named Temple Grandin.

HBO came out with a movie in 2010 about her life, and I’d like to offer a short review that may encourage you to see it if you haven’t already.

When the Experts Fail Us

hippocrates
Many of us have been in a situation where we’ve relied on an “expert” for advice.  Maybe it was with your own health or the health of a loved one.

What type of outcome did you have?  Was it a success or a failure?  Nowadays when it comes to health care, it seems that people have been conditioned to believe that an improvement in symptoms should be considered a success.

An Agnostic’s “Guide” to Believing

Open Bible
“Santa Claus does too exist.”

“Does not!”

“Does too!”

Not too long ago I wrote about my overwhelming faith as a child that Santa Claus really did exist.  Back then, my belief was so strong that I never once questioned it, and I was ready to defend it by causing bodily harm to anyone who tried to tell me otherwise.

What a great feeling that is… having no doubt, no disbelief.  Knowing completely that it’s true.  Ahhhhh…  the comfort and feeling of peace.

That was my faith as a child.

Faith as an adult doesn’t always come quite so easily.  Not everything is black and white.

The Equine Scratcher Product Review

Equine Scratcher
You probably have horses that love to scratch as much as ours do.  Sometimes they get so focused on the itch that they lose sight of the fact (actually they probably don’t care) that they are pulling their manes and tails out in the process of the scratch.

Well, a company called Two Fair Mares has a solution and it’s called the Equine Scratcher.  Welcome to the next product in our 2010 Product and Service Review Series.

A few months ago, Two Fair Mares sent Soulful Equine a letter via snail mail.  Since so few companies contact others that way anymore, it certainly made theirs stand out in the crowd.  We had seen their Equine Scratcher product in an online catalog and thought it looked like a very interesting product and made a mental note to find out more.

Brown Recluses, Nudity and Guardian Angels (G-Rated)

brown recluse with quarter
Few things strike fear into the hearts of people quite like spiders do.  The brown recluse, in particular, brings about visions of swelling flesh, open wounds and gangrene.

The brown recluse (also known as the Violin Spider and the Fiddleback Spider) is found only in North America.  North Americans are very fortunate in that there are only two native spiders that are considered extremely poisonous.  In addition to the brown recluse there is her distant cousin, the black widow.

The Brown Recluse Spider – A Nasty Little Creature

The brown recluse’s venom is different from that of the black widow in that it doesn’t affect the nervous system.  Instead, it is a necrotic toxin that acts directly on the skin and muscles to kill the tissues immediately surrounding the bite.  In addition to the dead tissue healing slowly, if at all, severe cases can result in toxic shock and kidney failure.  If you’ve ever seen pictures of human arms and legs that have been bitten, you completely understand how nasty this tiny creature can be.

Like so many organizations, Soulful Equine has a vision and we work each day to stay true to that vision in everything we do.

In my earlier article, Integrity Breeds Trust And Loyalty, I said that according to Wikipedia, one way to tell if someone has integrity is to see if “they behave according to the values, beliefs and principles they claim to hold.”

It’s a tall order, and we at Soulful Equine strive for it daily.

We have core principles, and we write about these principles and our experiences in hopes that people will find something useful that gets them one step closer to helping their horses thrive despite domestication.

Wild Horses – Madeleine Pickens Rides Again

Madeleine Pickens & The Wild Mustangs
A little while ago, we wrote an article called Protecting The Wild Horse – A Symbol Of Our American Heritage.  Whether you read that article or have simply tuned in to recent newscasts, you’ve probably heard about the plight of the American Mustang and the roundups that are being done by the Bureau Of Land Management (BLM) in the name of “saving these poor, starving, dehydrated creatures”.

Reality, however, proves time and time again that the overwhelming majority of these horses are healthy and strong on the range, and it’s only AFTER they are run ragged by low flying helicopters and herded into small pens where they are often held for years, that they become sick and dehydrated and sometimes die.
